A Connecticut woman caught driving while drunk and with three children in her uninsured SUV could have caused a crash if not for a quick-thinking driver who forced her off the road, authorities said.

Michelle Bullett, 36, of Hartford, was arrested Tuesday night, Nov. 19, after multiple people called 911 to report an SUV swerving along I-91, Connecticut State Police said.

The calls came in around 8 p.m. when her silver Volvo SUV was spotted swerving along the interstate near Exit 24 in Wethersfield. Police later found her pulled over near Exit 21 in Cromwell after another driver positioned their vehicle ahead of hers to prevent her from continuing, troopers said.

Police found her on the highway shoulder with the engine running. Three children — ages 3, 9, and 17 — were in the passenger seats, none of whom were wearing seatbelts, State Police said.

Bullett's eyes were bloodshot, and she appeared intoxicated, a trooper noted. While speaking with her, police learned she was driving on a suspended license, in an unregistered and uninsured SUV, with a license plate belonging to another vehicle.

She failed a field sobriety test, and a breathalyzer confirmed her blood alcohol content was over the legal limit, police said. Bullett later admitted to drinking, the trooper noted.

The Department of Children and Families took custody of the children, who were unharmed in the incident, police said.

Police charged her with:

  • Operating/parking an unregistered motor vehicle
  • Misuse of a registration plate
  • Driving without insurance
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs
  • OUI with child passenger (3 counts)
  • Failure to maintain proper lane – limited access highway

She was released from custody after posting a $5,000 bond, according to authorities.
